There are two different ways to send messages to your e-mail system. The first is from the command line on the e-mail system itself using any number of popular text-only, command line oriented e-mail clients. This used to be the only way to send e-mail in the early days, and the applications I ll introduce are variants of the originals found on the older legacy UNIX systems years ago. The second type of e-mail client I ll introduce are more contemporary graphical applications; these tend to be more familiar and your users are more likely to send mail this way. Some of the e-mail clients I will introduce are cross-platform, too, so they can run on Linux, Windows, or Mac OS, making it easier to support one mail client that works identically regardless of what operating system your users use. Remember, the technical term for a client e-mail application, regardless if it s text-only or graphical, is mail user agent (MUA). For simplicity s sake, I ll use the term MUA throughout this chapter.

Oracle Collaboration Suite makes use of all the Identity Management components of the infrastructure. The Oracle Internet Directory is used for storing both user data (such as passwords) and application data (such as Mail mailing lists); all the application component web interfaces are Single Sign-On aware; and the Certificate Authority is used to generate digital certificates stored in wallets in users Oracle Internet Directory entries. The preconfiguration of Identity Management is to enable the provisioning of user accounts in the various application components. The standard installation comes with provisioning set up for Mail, Calendar, Content Services, and Real-Time Collaboration. Any number of command-line e-mail applications exist for the Linux operating system. One of the original UNIX command-line e-mail applications is mailx. mailx is a simple but fully functional MUA that operates in two basic modes: send mode and read mode. On contemporary Linux operating systems, mailx has been replaced with an enhanced version found in /bin/mail.

The software owner in this table maps to the operating system account under which the binaries have been installed. We have omitted the primary group for the account oinstall for the sake of clarity. Furthermore, separate operating system groups DBAFIN and DBAREPORT separate access to the database instances. As with all user and group mappings in RAC, the UIDs and GIDs must be identical across all nodes. The SYSASM role replaces the previously used SYSDBA role as the all-powerful role in ASM from 11.1 onwards. Users logging in with this privilege can perform any maintenance operation. These are absolutely standard. An Oracle Collaboration Suite infrastructure database also has schemas for storing Mail and Content Services data. These are not really part of an infrastructure instance, and in all but very small installations you will not use these you will run the installer again, probably on a different machine, to create a second database. This is the database toward which you will point your Mail and Content Services applications. The final use of the infrastructure database is the Portal component repository. The Portal repository is preseeded with the portlet information needed to run the Oracle Collaboration Suite Portal, the user s entry point to the system. You can leave the Portal schemas there or, if the one database is heavily loaded, transfer it to a different database created especially for this purpose.
